The Great Ukrainian Duck Shoot. Crimea is an island under siege.
In less than a week Ukraine has disabled or sunk a Russian Merchant fleet anchored in the Sea of Azov. Ukraine claims to have hit as many as 99 small tankers, one ferry and one cargo ship all bound for Crimea with vital fuel and food supplies. The ferry we must assume was carrying fuel transport vehicles.
All strike claims are supported by video evidence.Ships without air defences are as vulnerable as tin ducks in a funfair shooting gallery. The Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy had already evacuated the Sea of Azov under pressure from air and sea attack so was unable to provide any protection. Land based Russian air defences have been either destroyed or withdrawn to protect oil refineries.
In their desperation, Russian military commanders placed machine gun platoons on ships in the hope small arms fire could bring down attack drones. Experience has already shown shooting drones is extremely difficult and absolutely impossible at night when they can be heard but not seen. The attacks were all at night.
Ukrainian drone operators have targeted the bridge section of the ships. The munitions do not carry enough explosive to sink ships outright. By attacking the bridge, they destroy the ship’s guidance and steering systems and avoid in most cases hitting the cargo. 101 tankers sunk in the shallow Azov Sea would undoubtedly create an environmental disaster on territory that will eventually return to Ukraine. The ships are immobile and stranded, they cannot get home without being towed and any such tow would leave the tow ship ship open to attack.
This is another Ukrainian victory and Russian disaster. The ships cannot be replaced; Russia does not have any ship building capacity in the region. If the ships are full, the cargo is dead in the water, It cannot be transferred or moved. It is money in a bank with no access code. These small ships were part of the Russian shadow fleet used to transport sanctioned oil out into the Black Sea to be transferred onto larger ships operating under non-sanctioned national flags to be shipped to customers like China or India.
Previously one of the world’s leading oil suppliers, Russia is now forced to import refined oil products from Belarus and Kazakhstan. It cannot deliver crude and it cannot obtain credit. The destruction of their Azov Sea merchant fleet will accelerate pressure on Russia as a whole and on Crimea in particular.
Crimea has no fuel for public use. What fuel remains is in the hands of the military authorities. Russia’s desperate attempt to find a supply route to Crimea has been permanently closed.
Crimea is an island under siege. Daily power cuts are routine; water pumping stations need fuel to get water to residential areas. It is mid-summer and fresh water is crucial for survival. Internal bridges on the peninsula have been brought down, preventing what transport is available from moving vital stores to towns. Crops ready for harvest will rot on the vines and in the fields because there is no fuel for farm machinery. The most effective transport systems in Crimea will soon be the bicycle and the horse.
As the situation deteriorates Russia will need to call for foreign assistance to prevent a humanitarian disaster, but first it would need to relinquish its claims to the occupied lands. There are already those in the Russian media beginning to whine and claim they have always been friends of Ukrainian people. In their case it is an inability even in mainland Russia to obtain enough fuel to get to work which is pushing the message home.
The war in Ukraine was a Russian war of choice. The war in Ukraine has killed or injured 1.4 million Russian soldiers, destroyed a wealthy economy, and injured every Russian citizen within its borders. It needs to stop, and it must be the Russian people who call the halt. Ukraine can win the battles, Ukraine can starve Crimea, Ukraine can hit refineries as far east as Omsk but only the Russian people can remove Putin.
The great Ukrainian Duck Shoot is one example of what is to come. Russian air defences have failed along the southern front. The choice for Russia is between their survival as a nation or serious compromise.
Russians must remove their leader, take their troops home, make peace, and start again. Alternatively, they can keep fighting on behalf of a man who has caused all this and still lives in Tzar like luxury while they suffer!
