@frontal

"SB: Do you make deals when you get to these final tables? The book seems to say you shouldn’t but I wondered if you do?

LN: I generally don’t. Let’s say there are three players left and I''m chip leader, and I’ve got 60% of the chips, the rest is split 30% and 10%. And someone says lets make a deal based on percentages and stack size, that’s an overlay for me as chip leader, it turns out. A lot of people don’t think so but the person who’s getting penalised is the person getting 10 %.

If that kind of deal is proposed and I can tweak it a little bit, I can say I’ve got 60%, you’ve only got 30% and 10%, the chances of you getting back are small, so instead of giving me 60% let me have 65. If I can negotiate something like that I’ll do it. If I’m playing against two players I think are quite confident then I would take a deal based on percentage.

I got an offer on one of the final tables at the Aussie Millions where I had the lowest chip stack and they proposed a three-way split! (laughs) So in those circumstances I take it! So to say I never take a deal isn’t true.

But the thing about deals is a three-way deal shouldn’t be linear. A two way deal is. If you and I were playing and you’ve got 60 % and I’ve got 40%, a fair deal is for us to both take second place money, and split the difference 60/40. That’s actually a fair deal. But let’s say there are three of us involved, and its 60%/30%/10%, the person with 10% should get more than that. It’s a non-linear deal. If I were in that position I’d say well I’ll do it for 20%. But generally I don’t like deals and almost never propose them myself. But I’ll listen to what people say."
